Scope and Contents Extract of a diary written by Alexander Carmichael including part of a journey from Uibhist/Uist towards Edinburgh. In it, Carmichael is pining for his pregnant wife Mary, who is in Edinburgh and is anxious about her health. It is clear that there has been a lack of correspondence between them causing each of them distress 'No letter no watch. God grant that she is well. Oh Mary Mary if you knew my suffer[in]g you would not thus treat me...God grant y[ou]r safe arriv[al] home my darling wife...

The marjority of the notebook relates to material collected in Earra Ghàidheal/Argyllshire but there are a number of loose leaves at the end which contain an account of a journey from Uibhist/Uist through An t-Eilean Sgitheanach/Isle of Skye, during which time his wife, Mary is in Edinburgh and is pregnant. Scope and Contents

Journal account written by Alexander Carmichael of the departure of his son Eoghan for Africa describing seeing him off at Waverley Station, Edinburgh, noting who met him in London and that he set sail on the 'SS Scot' from London, England for Chinde, East Africa [Mozambique]. Of his departure, Carmichael writes 'Poor darling boy! We shall not see him at the soonest for five years - perhaps never. God alone knows. This is the first break in the family.'
